This collection, donated by Tim and Katheleen Nealeigh, will feature over seventy-five nativities from around the world. It is a reminder of how the story of Christ has united people from across cultures over the years and of the peace that came to earth by the birth of Jesus. We invite all families to the Shrine to experience this annual celebration of Christmas.

Advent Wreath Making

All are welcome at this intergenerational event! Join us on Sunday, November 28 at 12:45 p.m. to make an Advent wreath to begin the season. We will gather in the Armory, located across Victory Parkway off of Dana. The event will conclude with a blessing of the wreaths. This year we will not be serving lunch and ask everyone to keep masks on throughout the event. Feel free to eat before you come or stop in to say hello and take supplies home with you. Each wreath kit will Cost $10, which can be paid for at the event. We will provide a wreath form, fresh greens, candle holders, and candles. If you saved your wreath form from last year, feel free to bring it to repurpose. RSVP to join us.

Since 1995, the University of Dayton’s Marian Library has presented a selection of its over 3,600 Nativity scenes from more than 100 countries, celebrating how people around the world ponder and picture the birth of Christ through many different cultural lenses.This year’s exhibit begins in the Stuart and Mimi Rose Gallery located on the first floor of Roesch Library. This space features Nativities from Peru, Mexico, the Czech Republic and Brazil in media that include wood, paper, clay and mixed media. The pieces on display explore the ways artisans employ regional artistic media and techniques to represent the Nativity tradition. Next, visit the Marian Library Crèche Museum on the seventh floor to learn more about “Mirror of Hope,” a large-scale installation by artist Kevin Hanna. Also on display is “Of Fragile Beauty,” a recently restored wax Nativity from Mexico, plus additional Nativities from Mexico, Brazil and the United States.

Our annual Journey to Bethlehem event to kick off Advent will be held this Monday, November 29 from 6:15–8:00 p.m. at St. Remy Hall. This popular event is or pre-schoolers and elementary school children, as well as their parents and grandparents. Come and make a monstrance and Nativity stick puppets, create your own memory verse prayer cards, and go on a journey through town searching for a place to stay, just like Mary and Joseph did on their way to Bethlehem!

Christmas … truly it is a wonderful time of the year, but it’s easy to get caught up in everything but its true meaning and the spectacular mission Jesus accomplishes for each and every one of us for all of eternity. There is a dynamic backstory to the birth of Christ. A beautiful prequal that we are invited to reflect on as we journey through this season of Advent. Join us on December 1 at 7pm for Advent Lessons & Carols, a beautiful service listening to eight scripture readings which recount the Fall, promise a Messiah, and call us to prepare room in our hearts for Christ. Each lesson is followed by a carol/hymn and a brief prayer.

This year will be a little different from the previous year’s. Due to the pandemic, Dayton 1st and 2nd graders will not be bussed or paired with a UD buddy for the night of Christmas on Campus. Instead, the event will be open to the campus community and the Dayton community and families to enjoy.

Mary and Joseph journeyed to Bethlehem where Jesus was born in humble conditions with angels and shepherds sharing their joy at the birth of the Savior. Wise men journeyed from far lands to adore the newborn King. On Saturday, December 11, 9:00-10:30am, Favret Hall will be transformed into the city of Bethlehem and we invite you to share in this reenactment of a difficult, but special journey culminating with the birth of Jesus. To all St. John families: please check out our parish website to register for Breakfast in Bethlehem. The morning includes a simple breakfast, vendors, activities, music, and more. “Beggars” will be collecting canned or non-perishable food for Reach Out Lakota. “Roman Guards” will seat you as you arrive. The real highlight of the morning? The Nativity story presented by our young parishioners and narrated so that all in the audience can follow along Joseph and Mary’s journey to Bethlehem.
