Eight men continue their diaconate journey

Eight men continued their journey toward ordination to the permanent diaconate Oct. 14 during the Institution of Readers and Acolytes at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud. Seven were instituted as readers and one as acolyte.

Reader is the second step toward ordination to the permanent diaconate and is responsible for the reading of Scripture during Masses.

Those installed as readers were:

  • Jorge Armondo Carrillo, St. Mary, Melrose

  • Jesus Hernandez Chavez, St. Mary, Melrose

  • Mario Gonzalo Mancilla, St. Leonard of Port Mauritius, Pelican Rapids

  • Carlos Pesqueda Silva, St. Mary of Mount Carmel, Long Prairie

  • Kelly Marthaler, St. Alexius, West Union

  • Lorenzo Sanchez Rodriguez, Assumption, Morris

  • Richard Wolter, Sacred Heart, Sauk Rapids

All seven were admitted to candidacy in January.

  • Robert John Craven of St. Augustine in St. Cloud was instituted as an acolyte.

An acolyte looks after the service of the altar and assists the deacon and priest in liturgical services, especially the celebration of the Mass. This is the last step before ordination. The typical formation period for deacons is four to five years.
